Christian Wear

Andy Stanley series.. Follow#4 Christian Wear
We are continuing our series on following Jesus.
Since this is the season of Lent, I believe it adds to the significance of following Jesus.
And to his words, take up your cross and follow me. During Lent we follow the path of the Cross….we meditate on the via Del la Rosa….the road of the Cross. We examine Christ’s sufferings and his attitude during his trials.
So my question for today…Is should people know we are followers of Jesus by what we wear?
Some groups are identified by their clothing…….
Who is are these people?
The Hasidim, or “pious ones” in Hebrew, belong to a special movement within Orthodox Judaism, a movement that, at its height in the first half
of the nineteenth century, claimed the allegiance of millions in Eastern and Central Europe–perhaps a majority of East European Jews.
They were founded in the mid-eighteenth century by Israel ben Eliezer. Many European Jews dressed as they did and they have kept the traditional dress, even though their rabbi founded his movement to escape the legalism of Judaism of his time.
How about these people?
These are Hutterites who originated in Germany and immigrated to Canada and the United States.
I had an ex hutterite woman in my church is Alberta by the name of Annie.
I always wondered why in the dead of winter, (-20) the men had heavy coats on, but the women never wore any.
Annie explained, the men had told the women they could have coats but only in black…..the women decided if that was their only choice they would do without. Kind of a protest, but they still must have been cold.
Who are these people?
I know some of these people.
So back to my question….
should people know we are followers of Jesus by what we wear?
Should we all wear tee shirts with Christian messages…Is that what will identify us as followers of Jesus?
But before we get there, allow me to remind you of where we have been.
This is the fourth week on our series Follow….Do you remember we witnessed a Tax Collector named Matthew begin to follow Jesus.
If a tax collector can follow…anyone can follow.
Four things we learned about Jesus’ invitation to follow:
1. Being a sinner does not disqualify you. It’s a prerequisite.
Jesus only invited sinners to follow him.
He invited them BEFORE they got better or even committed to do so.
Come and follow me…..
2. Being an unbeliever doesn’t disqualify you. None of Jesus’ earliest followers believed.
They were in process…they were believing a little at a time.
3. The invitation to follow is an invitation to relationship.
Jesus went home with Matthew to fellowship before he made any changes.
The changes Christ wants to make take place in the context of relationship.
4. Following forces me to focus on where I am, rather than where you are not.
The more conscious I am of the work God has yet to do in me, the less critical I am of what he has yet to do in you.
In our second study we looked at some Fishermen follow Jesus.
Peter, Andrew, James and John.
They had listened to His teaching and when he invited them to leave their nets and follow Him….Follow Him they did.
Luke 5:11 (ESV)
And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
But we discovered there are four stages that lead to following Jesus ….
1. Sit and Listen
Start to investigate the claims of Christ…..Is He who he says He is…….?
The second stage…
2. Loan him the boat
Jesus asked Peter something small…not committing his whole life…just let me use your boat for a few minutes.
Baby step of faith…..
Just start reading the New Testament…..Start attended church regularly….start coming to a Bible study group….
Take a small step
3. Take Him fishing……
After you have sat and listened, after you have taken the baby step of loaning your boat…
Go fishing with Jesus…..
Get out on the water and risk something for Jesus.
Do something differently than you have ever done it before….and do it differently because you are following Jesus.
And the last step……
4. Leave your nets
Now you are ready to surrender your whole life to Him.
Because you have investigated and believe him to be God in the flesh.
You recognize you cannot save yourself… need Him.
And so you surrender….you release your grip on your life and you turn your life over to Him.
They left their nets and followed Jesus.
Last week we explored how to have fearless faith.
That is what we want, isn’t it?
To be fearless….not ruled by fear….but to walk in God honoring, faith.
We are to follow Jesus so that we will be deeply rooted in the Father’s love, that fear will no longer rule our lives.
So now we want to explore what we wear as we follow Christ.++++
If we followed the Hasidic Jew pattern….we would try to dress like Jesus did in the first century.
I don’t think this is what Jesus meant we he said follow me.
At the Last supper, Jesus gave an example of how we were to live our lives….as Servants.
You remember how he and the disciples were around the table ready to celebrate Passover together…..
And Jesus rose …took up the basin and the towel and began to wash his disciples feet.
Remember, Peter objected, but Jesus insisted….and then he told them…..
John 13:12-15 (ESV)
12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you?
13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.
14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.
I not just copying what Jesus looked like….It is acting like him.
Isn’t our whole fashion industry built on trying to copy the cool kids….what they wear, how the wear their hair….what they do.
How many people tried to copy this look?
The Elvis wave…….
I know one guy who did
After Jesus washed their feet we read he was sad….He was troubled in spirit….He knew one of the disciples was going to betray Him….He gave Judas a piece of bread……
John 13:27 (ESV)
27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.”
And Judas went out into the night to betray Jesus for 30 pieces of silver……
Did you notice? Jesus washed Judas feet as well. He loved him as well. That is why the betrayal hurt so much.
And it is at that point of pain….Jesus gives a very important teaching.
John 13:34-35 (ESV)
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Imagine Jesus looking at them….Love each other….like I loved you….
[Matthew. You remember you were a despicable tax-gatherer. Remember how I treated you?]
[Nathanael, remember the day we met? Your exact words were: “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” You put down my home town and my people but I loved you anyway..]
[Peter, remember when you tried to tell me how I was going to run things….I loved you anyway.]
[Remember, in John 6, you were all ready to leave me,
but I didn’t leave you, did I?]
This is how we look like Jesus…not dressing like him, not wearing our hair like him….
But loving like he loved.
We really mess this up…..
We are not better than the Hasidic Jews or the Hutterites
The church has been guilty of trying to dress alike trying to act alike….elevating man made rules to look like God’s rules.
It’s easier to go to church and pray and even read the Bible than to love difficult-to-love people.
[It’s easy to confuse discipline with discipleship.]
So what should a Christian wear?
I searched the New Testament and do you know I discovered?
a dress code… we should look when we go out in public?
I found it….are you ready for it.
This is our new dress code.
Kim will make you a real deal on the boas……..OR>….
How about this….
Paul does actually have a dress code….
Colossians 3:12-14 (NIV)
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.
13 Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.
14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
Here is Paul’s list……this is what we are to wear…..when we get up in the morning….we are to put on these things….
Follow Wear
• Compassion
• Kindness
• Humility
• Gentleness
• Patience
• Forgiveness
• Love
We can do this because of who we are….We are God’s chosen people….He chose us….we are dearly loved…..
When we see ourselves this way it is easier to live this way….When we recognize how much God loves us….It is easier to love others and treat them in this manner……..
Let’s look at each of them in turn……..
sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others…
I love that song we sing….
“Mighty To Save”
Everyone needs compassion
Love that’s never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness
The kindness of a Savior
The hope of nations ……
Here is the face of compassion
Many of these qualities look alike…..
Becca and Stephen had something at their school about random acts of kindness….
Mark Twain who I don’t often agree with said….
Clothe yourself with Kindness…
HUMILITY….. C.S. Lewis who I do often agree with said….
Jesus gave us the example when he washed the feet of his disciples…..
And He told us he was giving us an example….we should serve as he served…we should do as He did…..we should be humble.
And then put on
Paul continues….
Maybe we can skip this one?
Too often we pray like this…
Patience allows life time to fall into place.
So we need to cultivate patience, and put on patience as we enter our day.
Two more items…we need to put on….
We must learn to forgive…think how many times Jesus spoke about this….
He forgave us…we are to pass it on….this is what it looks like to follow Jesus.
It doesn’t matter how much you read your Bible, how often you go to church….If you are bitter and refuse to forgive….you are not following Jesus.
This is what Louie Zamperini discovered….The prison guard the bird had been as cruel as possible towards Louie….but when Louie came to Christ, he knew he was supposed to forgive.
Is there someone you need to forgive…are you withholding forgiveness?
And the one last article we are to clothe ourselves with is…
Colossians 3:14 (NIV)
14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.
If you would be a follower of Jesus… will love others as He loved you…a follower of Jesus will be known for His love.
This is how we are to be identified …and how others will know we belong to Jesus.
This will be our Christian wear.
